One purpose of the Institute is to create a supportive and stimulating environment in which younger scholars may present their work for discussion. The core members of the writing workshop will be the best advanced students from Professor Huang’s annual seminars. The basic requirement for participation is to present a substantial paper and to join in the discussion of other papers.

Participants need to agree in advance to three principles:

1. comments should be constructive, pointing out the contributions of the article under discussion before engaging in criticisms;

2. comments must be brief and to the point, generally not to exceed five minutes, in no case longer than ten minutes;

3. everyone must agree to refrain from citing or circulating the papers, unless the author explicitly grants permission to do so.

Interested students and junior scholars should address a three to five hundred words letter of self-introduction to Professor Huang (huang@history.ucla.edu) and attach a draft article, prospectus or research plan.

The workshop will begin September 2009; the application deadline is July 31, 2009.

The Study Group will be led by Professor Wang Hui. Topics and texts will be designated in advance. The beginning date will be announced soon.
